Getaway #1

Retreat

Rate this book
Every once in a while, you need to get away from it all.

I was a woman on the edge, shaken and shattered after a breakup that felt like it tore my entire world apart.

My best friend, sick of watching me drown in misery and melancholy, harassed me until I agreed to go with her on a week-long wilderness retreat.

She promised days spent bonding and getting in touch with our inner bad-asses.
It was supposed to be all about the two of us roughing it and making do with the bare minimum. She assured me we were going to be pushed to our limits in ways that were unimaginable. Neither one of us could have ever guessed just how right she was.

Nowhere in the glossy brochure did it say anything about the fact I was going to have to battle the insufferable but deliciously rugged and sexy trail guide instead of the elements. The brochure also forgot to mention the part that warned when you left civilization behind, there was no place to pack your inhibitions and fears.

I was told that I would be facing a week where the only thing I should expect was the unexpected. However, no one mentioned that I was going to have to fight for my life…and my heart as soon as I ventured into the unknown.

I was a pro at hiding from my feelings but when it came time to face a real threat, one that could change everything, I learned I was more of a no surrender, no retreat kind of girl.

Retreat is a standalone novel, the first in the Getaway series which centers on the hardheaded and brokenhearted Warner brothers and the women that dare to love them.

These boys are very good at putting the wild in wilderness.

“Everything that is precious and valuable is usually kept behind glass. It usually takes someone unafraid of the shards and the edges to break through that so that they can get to the treasure inside.”

Every time I open a book by Jay Crownover, I know it’s going to be a voyage into unchartered territory: unique, unpredictable, and utterly brilliant. I know I’m going to just jump because the unknown is the adventure. MY ADVENTURE. Oh was Retreat the biggest Jay Crownover adventure yet. I lived and loved through Retreat, a beautiful and broken love story where I went on the adventure of a lifetime—one of hope, heartbreak, happiness, and heroism.

Channeling my inner bookworm dare devil, I dove into Retreat blindly. From the minute I jumped into this story, Retreat ROCKED MY WORLD. I could not devour this book—this drug of words—fast enough. Retreat was my adrenaline...my adventure...my ache...my ALL.

Beautiful red-haired and blue-eyed spitfire, Leora, ‘Leo,’ was wooed by her best friend to embark on a girls’ getaway to escape her post-break-up blues for the adventure of a lifetime, leaving the East Coast behind to conquer the Wild West of Wyoming for a week. One ranch run by three stunning Warner brothers, cowboys but not quite.

One almost-cowboy but with the looks of a Viking, Cyrus ‘Cy’ Warner, a grizzly, gruff, and gorgeous man of towering strength and pure ‘Renaissance-sculpted’ muscles was the perfect distraction that Leo did not know she needed.

I did not know what to make of Cy at first, this hot, dark, intense, and brooding Adonis. Cy had my attention from the start. This mountain man of mystery intrigued me; Cy was a puzzle I wanted to solve. Cy became the fantasy I never knew I had but so very much needed. As much as Cy had Leo’s attention, his was focused on the spitfire of a pretty gal with locks painted reddish-blonde.

“Redheads are easy to love but are hard to keep ahold of, which is why you went from distracting to dangerous as soon as you opened that smart-ass mouth of yours, Sunshine. I don’t have the time or the patience to deal with the kind of destruction you’re capable of.”

Leo has walls like the Great Wall of China, a heart hardened to protect it from getting decimated. Cy has been broken by the women in his life and can’t afford to give his fragile heart away again.

“He might not be a cowboy on the outside but was one hundred percent cowboy on the inside. His life was what sad country songs were written about. It sounded tragic and heartbreaking.”

Despite being stubborn as mules who rub each other the wrong way as they spit fire at each other like dragons, they burned inside for one another. When Cy and Leo are thrust together multiple times, neither can ignore the flames of desire that unceasingly spark between them.

“His mouth hit mine with punishing force…I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t think. I couldn’t even move. All I could do was feel.”

For once, Leo threw caution to the wind and kissed this beautiful, brave, and bold man who was starting to mend her broken heart when it began to beat again. Oh Cy, he made my heart beat with passion that penetrated from the pages from that powerful kiss…that powerful man.

“Always so hot and bright, Sunshine. You burn in the best ways…Time might be limited, but all the different ways I want to make you whisper and then scream my name feel infinite now that I have the taste of you on my tongue and the feel of you on my fingers.”

I WAS ON FIRE!!! The heat hammered into me, brandishing my body with an intense heat, where I was scorching everywhere. I loved Leo and Cy's mad chemistry, so combustible and captivating. These words melted me—burning through like hot coals—seducing all of my senses.

“We only get this moment, Sunshine, just one, so it needs to matter to you as much as it matters to me.”

“It matters and you matter, Cy.”

I SWOONED so hard. Words of passion and promise kissed me where I felt butterflies dancing in my belly, a fierce feeling and fusion of heartbreak, hope, and happiness.

I FELL IN LOVE with Cy, this almost-cowboy lassoed my heart, hitting it with a force I never saw coming but one that struck me hard like lightning. This gorgeous and gruff guy was my hero. THIS IMPERFECTLY PERFECT MAN WAS PURE PERFECTION.

“He was the spark, but I was the flame.”

Danger looms, possibly sending act and Leo into a collision before they’ve even begun the journey. Is their new bond powerful enough to crush the past, demolish those doubts, and heal their hearts enough to take the leap together or will their chance at happiness crash and burn?

Leo is beauty and bravery in spades, a heroine who I loved and oh did she grow! Cy...that almost-cowboy stole my heart! These Warner men—especially the oldest brother Cy, the grizzly, gorgeous god of a man and hero with a huge heart—wrapped themselves around me and my heart so tight, I didn’t want to let them go.

Retreat was a roller coaster ride of an adventure. Retreat was a fierce and fiery flame of a love story that burns and bleeds heart, heroism, and hope. Retreat was a fusion of feels where no emotion is left untouched. Retreat was utterly brilliant, badass, and beautiful. Retreat was unputdownable. Retreat was…is...EVERYTHING!!!!

This story is a soul slayer, heart-warmer, and heartbreaker, and oh did Retreat own my heart and soul...owning me! This book burned with exhilaration and emotion, beckoning me right into the flames as my heart and soul caught fire. Retreat bled into me. My heart beat out of my chest, my pulse pounded, and breaths were bated.

I love the way Jay Crownover says: Screw the world! I’m writing what I want. I’m writing for me. I’m taking a chance. Life is about taking a chance…dancing in the rain…following your dreams. You make your own adventures and the best ones are those driven by the heart and soul like the fierce and fiery stories Jay Crownover pens to life. OH DID I LOVE THIS STORY SO HARD!!!

Jay Crownover painted and penned to life such a vivid picture of this journey—the ranch, the trails, everything—that this story played as a movie in my mind while reading. The scenes oozed with life. I could see and hear the horses, and the ranch. I could smell the fresh mountain air. I could feel the tranquility.

Like the rock star and rebel she is, Jay Crownover covertly created and released Retreat, the sweetest surprise ever!! Retreat was a risk I’m so glad Jay Crownover wrote…one I’m so glad I took. I'd devour a grocery list and anything this uber talented author writes! Jay’s badass boys with big ass hearts are my fire…my desire…my forever kryptonite. Retreat was pure gold. That ‘Crownover Crack’ struck again, but I knew it would as it always does.

★★★★★ fierce and full-of-feels stars

All I can say is WOW! WOW to every single thing about this book! I've only read one other book by Jay Crownover, but I still have to say that RETREAT will probably go down as one of my FAVORITES from her. RETREAT was such a wild and sexy ride that I never wanted to get off of. Ms. Crownover had me HOOKED from the cover and the blurb, and now I can tell that this new GETAWAY series is going to be one to watch out for.

"Redheads are easy to love but are hard to keep ahold of, which is why you went from distracting to dangerous as soon as you opened that smart-ass mouth of yours, Sunshine. I don't have the time or the patience to deal with the kind of destruction you are capable of."

OMG! The banter between Leo and Cy was just EVERYTHING! It was angry, flirtatious, sexy, and downright dirty! I LOVED it! Expecting to meet some 'real' cowboys, Leo was surprised to meet the Warner brothers, especially the gruff and hard-headed oldest brother, Cry. These two characters weren't ready for each other but they were forced to be around each other and things got insane from there. RETREAT was SO MUCH MORE than I was expecting. It had action, adventure, and so much heart.

"I've always managed to keep my feet under me. No matter what hit me, I stood standing. You left and I fell to my knees, Sunshine."

I laughed. I cried. I gasped. I sighed. There was nothing to stop me from reading this cover to cover in one night. I had SO MUCH FUN while reading RETREAT, and with the impeccable writing that is Jay Crownover's, I know you will devour this book as quickly as I did. We were introduced to the other Warner brothers, Sutton and Lane, and boy, there is SO MUCH to tell there. I can't wait to see what Ms. Crownover brings us next with this AMAZING new series!

Retreat is not your typical Jay Crownover story but it definitely doesn't lack that usual Jay flair. You get more than a sexy, no-nonsense cowboy and a city girl running away from her problems, you also get a hold-your-breath suspense thrown in around the romance. I loved that there was a lot going on in the story, but never so much that I got lost or confused. Everything that was going on just added to the intrigue and kept me captivated.

I was a little nervous at first when we were introduced to Leo and she came off as a little judgmental, but once we got to know her I ended up really liking her character. She and Cy had an amazing chemistry that was never lost throughout the book and it's my number one reason for this being such a big recommend from me.

Wow...
This is a different Jay Crownover. I loved this Jay as much (if not a little more even) than the Jay I have read and loved. Her Marked Men are the boys that got me back into being a voracious reader. But the Warner brothers will stick with me forever. These characters are raw and damaged and broken. Yet the rise and grow, then take another beating, only to rise and grow again. The suspense is good and the sex is hot, but the characters are why I gave Retreat 5 stars. Stunning story that had me fanning myself from the heat between Leo and Cy, then crying for them later on. Beautiful.

3.5-4 stars

Due to a hand injury, I can't expand much on this review so I'll just give you a heads up and say this had quite a different feel than Jay Crownover's other books. Also a lot of introspection by the heroine with a fair amount of repetition (in her introspection that is). Generally I enjoyed it but I have a feeling I'll like the next one a lot more.

I usually like Jay Crownover books. Especially the Marked Men series.

But Retreat for me is like watching spaghetti cowboy movie with never ending cliffhanger. I end up weary and frustrated. Into the romance Miss Crownover throws is action, and suspense which does nothing to enhanced the story plot. The narrator is also done a very bad job reading it.

And it is 12 hours long! Liie I said, never ending cliffhanger.

“Sometimes the heart just chooses wrong. All you can do is wait for it to figure that out and hope it picks better the next time around.”

It’s not a secret how much I love all things Jay Crownover—she just knows the way to my heart a little too much. She nails every single one of my bad boy fantasies—ones who are big, troubled and broody with a soft heart and a broken, yet beautiful soul. And it never mattered where the story took me—may it be the city, the wrong side of the tracks, and now, the country. Hell, she could set it in the wilderness or the middle of nowhere for all I care and I’m pretty sure I’d still dig it. I just love this author's grit, rawness and honesty, and the unbridled passion she never fails to inject into her books. Every work of hers is just a unique, moving and blissful journey and experience in and of itself. And Cy and Leo’s tale is no different at all. Retreat is actually the perfect start to set such a brilliantly thrilling and unexpected tone in a new series—one where the born and raised city girl clashes with pure country (not quite) cowboy.

Cyrus Warner is blunt as hell and grumpy as f*ck. This not-so-cowboy gave off such a mysterious vibe in the beginning since he really kept to himself and didn’t talk much, but there was no mistaking how much of an alpha he was. All throughout the book, you’ll just witness the transformation in him—how much love and passion he has burrowed beneath all those scowls and intense looks. I obsessed over everything about him—his gruffness, his intuitiveness, his primal instinct to protect, his utter love and loyalty to his family, his pure sexiness, his filthy mouth, and most of all, his precious heart. Seriously, with the way this story went, Cy’s protective streak is enough to bring you to your knees and melt you into a heap of swoony feels. Just be ready to surrender your heart to this man—cowboy or not.

“Every touch between us was a memory in the making and every word as he eased me in the water was a vow I knew he intended to keep.”

There are a lot of reasons why Cy nicknamed Leora Connor Sunshine the moment they first interacted. But my favorite reason of all might be the one where he saw her as this bright beacon of hope and strength, despite everything she’s been through and was still coming to terms with when she turned up at the ranch with her best friend. Leo is one of the bravest, toughest women I’ve read in all of Jay Crownover’s books. She was gravely deceived by her ex-boyfriend, resulting to her building up walls that were so unbreakable, nobody could try and penetrate them. Her trust and confidence was infinitely crushed to bits and pieces; she became so thirsty for love and approval. But despite everything warring within her, Leo still used that time in the ranch to try and embrace her fears and move forward, no matter how hard it was. And the moment she decided to let Cy and the other Warners in, I just loved her even more.

Reading Retreat and basking in all its goodness certainly made me want to get lost in the countryside and hunt down these sexy cowboys. It absolutely made my heart race and my blood pump hard for so many reasons. Cy and Leo together all throughout was just off the charts, blazing hot. But the twists and turns—holy hell—they were unlike anything I’ve read from this author before. The storyline completely blindsided me and left me in utter awe of how remarkable and heart-stopping it was all laid out for the reader. And with the way this ended, you’d die to have Emrys and Sutton’s book in your hands stat. Truly, the Getaway Series just might be my new Crownover favorite! And this one? It’s by far the BEST. JAY CROWNOVER BOOK. EVER!

DNF at 32%.

4.5 ‘We just fell in love’ stars!

His lips hit my temple as he lifted the hand splayed across my ribs to settle over my racing heart.
“Destroyed, Sunshine. This is what it feels like to be destroyed.”

Dust off those cowboy boots and head out to Wyoming and prepare to fall in love with the unlucky in love but very delectable Warner men from Jay Crownover’s new Getaway Series! ‘Cause oh boy, didn’t we just fall head over heels for ‘not quite a cowboy’, Cy Warner. What a man. A very sexy, alpha and beautiful man!

As soon as we saw the cover for Retreat we felt compelled to check it out and we were hooked. It’s been 5 years since we picked up a book by Jay Crownover and we couldn’t help but admire how much her writing has grown during that time. It was fabulous! We highlighted a passage on nearly every page, such was the stirring beauty of this authors words which we greedily devoured.

“I like it better when you smile.”
“Haven’t had much reason to do so until you came crashing into my life, Sunshine.”

What a wonderful story Retreat was and what a terrific introduction to a series we want more of already! Retreat is a story of self-discovery and second chances that had our hearts racing throughout, whether it be with the suspense and thrills that hit us midway through the story, the sheer tangible passion between Cy and Leora (Leo), or from the absolute romance between the loyal, rugged, gruff, masculine alpha with a loving heart, a hidden vulnerability and a deep seated sense of responsibility, and the gorgeous Leo who had become disenfranchised with herself after a failed relationship had her questioning herself and shattering her confidence. Everything about this romance spoke to our hearts. A sexy, at times thrilling, and always heart-warming romance!

‘His story made my own seem silly and insignificant by comparison and suddenly I knew the bruises on my heart were nothing compared to the scars slashed on his.’

Whilst this story does occur over a short time span, and normally we prefer feelings to build a little longer, it didn’t bother us as their feelings came across as completely real and genuine. Both Leo and Cy were mature, had suffered heartache and knew how to communicate. There was no uncommunicative crap between them and so the intensity of their feelings was believable and honest. We really did experience the romance, love and emotion between them both.

“Love isn’t logical or reasonable. Our hearts make no sense.”

We adored every character and reveled in the friendship between Leo and Emrys. Em was a loyal and loving friend who had singlehandedly brought Leo out of a dark phase when her confidence, self-worth and trust had been rocked following a break up with a man who wasn’t who he appeared to be and her own past insecurities. Bottom line; Leo wasn’t happy with her life and it was at Em’s insistence they get away from it all for a one week trek on a ranch in Wyoming. This trip would serve to be life changing for them both in very different ways. We were completely consumed in Cy and Leo’s story and we found a book boyfriend who’ll be hard to beat in 2017. KA fans, we think you’ll love this one! Pick this one up and let the swooning commence! Sigh…our hearts are still swooning!

4 Cy and Leo Stars

A Cowboy who isn't quite a Cowboy??? Sign me up...
This is a really strong start to a new series which has quite a different feel to it from Jay Crownover's previous work. Yes , there are hot alpha men with a heart of gold under a gruff exterior. Yes, there are heroines that are strong and kickass with a dash of vulnerable. But, there was not a single tattoo artist/ shop in sight. In fact, in the depths of Wyoming there was not much in sight that connected you with any city life. Just lots of beautiful scenery that is written with such care and detail, I felt as if I was there. Cyrus is the eldest brother of three and he holds the family together . He has done this at great personal cost to himself. Leo is our sassy, sardonic girl who takes no prisoners! She is healing from a romantic liaison that was not what she thought it was. But, she is also healing from some life blows that she has had dealt to her. I liked Leo and her utter loyalty , bravery and wit. I liked that she grew in character and that in many ways she was a direct contrast to her best friend Emrys. (Can't wait for her story!)
There is drama, angst in moderation, pretty intense sexy stuff, some laugh out loud moments and a couple of heartstopping twists that I did not see coming.
HEA? Yes. It ends properly for Cy and Leo but leads into the next book which will be for Sutton, the middle brother.
Cheating? No. These two are solid but I winced a bit when Cy talks about his previous relationship and his regular hook up. You do not see him with anyone else at all and he clearly falls very hard for our girl.

Will definitely want to read the next book....Hot Cowboys?...Yes, please.

Surprise book by Jay Crownover? Hell Yeah! I was sooo happy when she announced this to us that I was jumping up and down with excitement.

When I woke up this morning, I could finally buy it, started it and finished in less than a day. You get sucked right into the story from the very first lines.

The reason for that is because Jay created characters that just get to you. Leo is a girl with a broken heart, a broken trust and a broken confidence. She got burned badly and her best friend has gotten her to agreed to an outdoor adventure for a change of scenery. If she didn't expect much from this trip besides making her best friend happy, she quickly realized she was wrong when she met Cyrus.

Cyrus is the not-so-cowboy she butts head most of the beginning of the book and rest of the book if we are honest lol, but the chemistry between them is off the chart. From the beginning you can tell that something is growing between them and I loved that both of them sort of had closed-hearts because as the story went on, they slowly opened to each other as they spilled drops of their pasts.

Both have experiences that can be related to everyone and I think that's what made this book such an easy and entertaining read. Even if you didn't live exactly what they did, you can easily see yourself through experiences that burned you. Leo's thoughts and reactions spoke to me in volume and I didn't even live the kind of burn she went through but her fears can be interpreted for so many different heartaches. Cyrus' past explained so much of his attitude and you just want him to get the happiness he deserves. And I believe every girl should get a Cyrus. Jay like always made sure we would all be swooning over her men.

I really liked how Leo and Cy both grew somewhat in the book. Jay showed with their growth how it's not always easy to put the past and doubts behind, but if you work at it, it's always worth it in the end.

Jay created not only main characters we can relate to and understand, but she also created other characters that were filling out the story perfectly. Some you will love from the get-go and others that will slowly get to you. I don't think this story would have been the same without them and I'm really looking forward to seeing them again in the future books.

This is a new series by Jay that I'm just looking forward to read the next ones to come. I'm highly recommend this book. You will find it all in this series for your reading pleasure.

His look, the way his entire face tightened in hungry, appreciative lines made me feel like something more, made me feel like I deserved to be worshiped and maybe even loved. If that was how he looked at his girl, then I never wanted to be anything else.

Cyrus Warner had just as many control issues as I did, which was why we both liked to test the other’s limits and neither one of us liked to fail.

This was pretty different from the usual Crownover stories I have read and I not only applaud the author for trying something new but I really enjoyed it.

Mostly first person from heroine's pov, she's a bit cranky, has some trust issues, and been burned but I liked her tough cookie act up against our hero. Hero's a cool, straight-shooter, sexily self-assured, and wary of love cowboy who wears motorcycle boots. They played off each other well and had some hot scenes (who knew campground showers could be such a scorching sex setting).

Hero's brothers with heroine's bestfriend feature heavily, they're stars of the next books in the series and worked great to add and round out the story. There's some mystery/action/suspense that will keep the pages turning. I thought the last 1/3 or so of the ending was slowed things way down and there were even some sex scenes I started to skim, I felt like the story dragged on a bit too much and the action and danger our characters found themselves in got fantastical and instead of feeling sad/worried, it lost me.

Otherwise, this was a great something different and I'm definitely going to continue reading in the series.

I loved this book and I am going to tell you why.

First we have to talk about the incredible relationship Leo & Em have, they are what everyone should have in a best friend. Leo is in need of some girl time and some time to come to terms with things from her past.
So Em convinces her to come with her the journey isn’t easy but I loved that Em was there for Leo no matter what.
And in turn when Em needs her Leo is there for her. It’s incredible to have a friendship like that.

We meet Cy, and his brothers. But it’s Cy that draws Leo in. She can’t help it this gruff brooding man has that something she is just drawn to, but it’s not one sided either. And they both try hard to ignore it but that’s the thing about attraction right; when it hits you are all in wither you’re ready or not. (The Shower Scene people is hell-a HOT!!)

Their experience is something no one saw coming and it’s going to change everyone involved. I loved the action and the interaction between all of the characters. It’s not like your everyday romance book it’s so much more. And I can’t wait for the second book in this series! I need more.

I wasn’t sure of Natasha’s narration at first I kind of had to get used to her and her voices for the different characters. But once I did, I quiet enjoyed it.

Worth the credit.. Umm YEAH!

*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*

Why 2 stars? I can't over how judgy and negative the heroine is. I just hated being in her head. It isn't a happy place, you could say. I waited though, for her to improve her attitude I guess. But I had to get through a lot that I skimmed so many parts of the book--just to see if she becomes a lil more Sunshine-y. (I don't think she did.) With my irritation on the h in the way, I just didn't feel the romance. I didn't feel the chemistry.

How the H was described in the plot/reviews that I read was one of the reasons why I felt the pull to read this book. I was kinda disappointed though. I mean, for such a mysterious, brooding man, he sure speaks a lot. Whiiiich leads to another issue I had with this book:

Why did the characters speak in monologues? I can't get over how that irritates me. Maybe it doesn't seem like a big deal right now. But it definitely was a big NO for me. It will start to bore the hell out of you when you get to the third monologue of a single conversation. One character asks a question, the other answers by telling his freaking life story. It just doesn't seem like the natural way a conversation flows.

Well, this was a flop for me. I've read worse so 2 stars it is.

Retreat was such a good read, I didn't want it to end. This book was something I did not expect and more.
I definitely recommend read this book if you like Jay books. That something new and refreshing. The whole book was full of anticipation, because I do not know what will happen next.
I can't wait for the next book. I hope that it is equally full of adventures/ surprises.

"Cy’s a rock, or maybe he’s more like a goddamn boulder since he’s so big."
"If he’s a rock what does that make me?"
"Well, Sunshine, I’d say you’re the only thing on earth that can warm stone up. You’re the sun and the shine. You’re the warmth that chases out the chill all the way to the middle. If rock gets hot enough it can explode."

I enjoyed this book but the main reason for it wasn't the couple this romance is about.

I couldn't believe Cyrus and Leo's connection was more than sexual.
Cy says he has lost half of his heart to his ex wife and he openly tells Leo he has flings with visitors pretty much every time an attractive woman comes along...
How I'm supposed to believe Leo is a different matter?
Because she makes him smile? Really?
A couple of DAYS and they're in love.

So... yep there's sexual chemistry but LOOVE?
I didn't buy it, not even at the end of this book.

That said...
I enjoyed the setting and I ended up interested in every single secondary character...I can't wait to read Sutton & Em's story!

4,5 stelline

LOVED this one! A little slow to start but once it got going it was fantastic. Super steamy with smoking hot sexy scenes, a sexy cowboy and a bit of a suspense - this was such a great book! I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

I must like punishing myself. I don't know what I was thinking.

No hay necesidad de que les de pena ajena, me doy pena propia.

That's all I planned on saying about this book. But me caga la verga la ignorancia gringa.
Apparently the protagonist of this book can't conceive there's anything related to drugs happening in the USA, she's all *shook* and *gasping*, even when the States is the second country that most consumes pot (cannabis) in the world, second only to a country where it's actually legal to do so. Still, for her only in foreign countries does the trade behind the consumption happens.

Actual quote:
“Grow spot?” We were in Wyoming, not Columbia or Mexico. “You mean a drug field?”

I rolled my eyes so hard they almost fell out of their sockets.

And the pendeja esta can't even correctly spell COLOMBIA.
Columbia: Sportswear and Outdoor Clothing Brand & and a University in New York City.
Colombia: a country.

‘His story made my own seem silly and insignificant by comparison and suddenly I knew the bruises on my heart were nothing compared to the scars slashed on his.’

A sexy, at times thrilling, and always heart-warming romance!.... See full review here at TBB

Boy, does Jay Crownover sure know how to keep a secret. I learned of the existence of Retreat right after Christmas and immediately applied for an ARC. The very next day, I learned it was out in the world, and I have so much faith in Jay's storytelling abilities that I didn't even wait to learn if I had been selected for the ARC - I went to Amazon and bought the paperback right away. Best. Decision. Ever.

I'm so glad Retreat was my first read of 2017. I started the year off on a high note, because Retreat was absolutely incredible. It's about two friends, Leona - or Leo - and Emrys, who decide to go on a unique vacation. Leo has lost her way ever since a very bad breakup left her in a dark place. Emrys books the two of them a week-long trail ride with real-life cowboys in the Wyoming back woods. No cell phones, no high-stress jobs, and lots to distract Leo so that she can find her way back to herself. It was supposed to be quiet and serene and soul-searching.

The three brothers who run the ranch offering the trip - Cyrus, Sutton and Lane Warner - are all very different, but each interesting in their own ways. It's Cy though that catches Leo's eye from the moment they step off the airplane. He's grumpy and broody and not at all what Leo pictures a cowboy should look like. But, he proves quickly that he might wear motorcycle boots and not own a stitch of flannel, but he really knows what he's doing on those trails. And when danger hits their small group and the calm vacation becomes life threatening, both Cy and Leo find out what they're really made of.

Authors walk a fine line when they write characters like Leo. She's bitter and angry and unhappy with pretty much everything ever since her last relationship went way south. It's hard to convey that to a reader without making the character someone that's easy to hate. Which, honestly, is usually what happens with me. I get so angry at how badly the character is treating the people around her that it's hard for me to root for her HEA, especially with a guy that's wonderful.

However, Jay Crownover wrote Leo absolutely perfectly. She was just the right amount of bitchy so that I understood how hurt and shaken she was. But, she was also just the right amount of forgiving that I felt that the person she is now is not how she usually is. It made me want her to get back in touch with her former self so badly, and I believed she could do it.

Honestly, the amount of growth in Leo from beginning to the end is astounding and one of the most satisfying parts of the book. A lot of that has to do with Cy and the influence he had on her. Leo let him in because he was unassuming and seemed almost as grumpy as she. He was a kindred spirit, and it didn't hurt that they had awesome chemistry from the beginning. They lit that trail on fire.

But Leo also grew so much because she HAD to. When trouble strikes their group of 11, Leo has no choice but to put her crap aside in order to help ensure that everyone - but especially Em and Cy - survives. She had to suck it up and be brave. Situations like that change people. And at least for Leo and Cy, the adversity they faced and how they handled it broke loose the walls they had built around their hearts. Not everyone was positively affected by the outcome of their situation, though, and I am already on the edge of my seat waiting for book two in this series so that I can see how things work out for everyone else.

Retreat was edgy and suspenseful with plenty of Jay Crownover's special brand of sexiness and heat. And I absolutely loved the setting, as nearly all of the book takes place in the woods while they're on the trail. Retreat is told from Leo's POV, and I was cool with that, since it was clear she was the one who had the furthest to come in her quest to rediscover herself. This is totally unlike every other Jay Crownover book I've read before, but it's no less amazing. I can't wait to see what comes next.

4 Man & wilderness stars

I’m always up for a bit of cowboy action, and this delivered in spades.

Bestfriends Leora (Leo) and Emrys sign up for a weeks escape adventure in the mountains of Wyoming, trailing the scenery on horseback. Hopefully it will help Leo extricate the dating demons she’s fallen foul of lately.

On meeting the three Warner brothers, the not so much cowboys, Leo hadn’t prepared for the immediate effect one of their trail leaders would have on her.

Cyrus (Cy) Warner was the eldest of the brothers, who had reluctantly moved with the times in order to support the ranch his father had spent his life creating. Cy wasn’t one for too much personal contact, but realised the ranch was a business and therefore had to consider other options of raising funds.

A natural brooder, Cy would keep himself locked up in his beast of an office, unless there was a pretty maiden passing through that may tempt him out.

Leo more than lived up to her strawberry blond character, which drew the immediately attention of surly Cy. Not one to usually accompany the city guests, Cy found himself helping the brothers out, Sutton and Lane, who were the more cheery leaders.

What escalates quite quickly in the attraction stakes, is then forced in another direction when the entire group are thrust into a turbulent situation.

What I liked about this book was that the almost immediate connection between Cy and Leo wasn’t as cliche as some insta-love stories can be. The atmosphere was whip cracking and easy to move along with. Both Leo’s and Cy’s previous experiences would have had them holding back under the circumstances, but they were inevitable.

The injection of suspense added great big logs to the fire, which helped to add character depth as well as drama.

The ground has been laid for Sutton and Emrys’s story

Fast paced and action packed, Retreat was very different from Jay Crownovers previous novels. She took a chance on a new type of book and I applaud her for that. I love me a sexy cowboy and Cy was oh so sexy. Retreat was exciting and fun. Filled with steamy moments and heart stopping action.

“Destroyed, Sunshine. This is what it feels like to be destroyed.”

There hasn’t been a Jay Crownover book I haven’t enjoyed and Retreat was no different. I will say the second half of this book was better for me than the beginning but that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy the beginning. Leo is snarky and strong willed and Cy is broody and unwilling to put up with her city girl antics. The two of them facing off was the highlight of the beginning of the book for me.

‘If this was what falling felt like, I couldn’t wait to do it again.’

Retreat read like an old school Romantic Suspense just like Jay promised and I was constantly eager to see what would happen next. The one thing I would say is that I wish there was more dialogue throughout the whole novel. It’s not that there wasn’t any but I personally would have loved more. Still I loved this sexy cowboy and the adventure he and his little lion found themselves on. Now, I desperately need the next book in this series because the angst for that one is already built up so high and I cannot wait!

Last book of 2016! I couldn't have asked for a better way to end the year. Review to come!

Update 12/31/16:

See more reviews on my blog Novels and Necklaces

Seeing as this was the last book of 2016 that I read, I think it's fitting that it's also the last review of 2016 I write. To say that I was excited to read this book was an understatement.

description

A surprise book by Jay Crownover just in time for the end of 2016? Heck yes! I got the book as soon as it went live on Amazon, and started reading it almost immediately (I had another book to finish first). I honestly couldn't put this book down because Jay hooked me right from the first page. There is so much to love about this book, and it was so different than her usual style, but I loved it just the same. When authors take risks and write books that are a departure from what readers have come to expect, that is the moment where they truly shine. And this book is certainly no exception to that. Jay's amazing writing and storytelling instantly transports you to the wilderness of Wyoming, and you never want to leave (and why would you with those sexy not-quite cowboys?).

“Sometimes that’s all you have to do to make the best out of a bad situation. You hold on when letting go is so much easier.”

I love single POV books because it always adds that mystery element to the story, and in Retreat this worked perfectly. I loved seeing the entire story through Leo's perspective, and only getting the glimpses into Cyrus's mind when he chose to share it with Leo. I loved Leo right away (despite Jay's warning that she might take some getting used to). Sure she was a bit negative and had her walls built up high, but she had every right to be given her current situation. Throughout the story, Leo felt incredibly real and relatable, and that's where Jay excels in her characters. Regardless of their situation and other aspects of their life, there is always something that lets you connect with the character on a deeper level. Not many authors can do this as well as Jay can, and it's one of the many reasons I can rely on her books to give me exactly what I need. Leo is a girl with a broken heart, a girl whose ability to trust anyone has been shattered, and most importantly a girl who doesn't believe in herself anymore. I loved watching her become the woman she was meant to be and get that confidence back. Despite everything that happened, she found herself again (and in a lot of ways that was much more important than the man she found while doing that).

“Sometimes we get more than we asked for because we’ve settled for less for so long. When you pay your dues, you’re bound to be rewarded, eventually.”

Now let's get onto that sexy cowboy (I wish I didn't just mean that figuratively if you catch my drift)....Cyrus is nothing short of amazing. He's really everything a girl could ask for: rugged, protective, a bit rough around the edges but with a sweet center, and a dirty mouth that would leave any girl fanning herself (and also wanting more).

description

He definitely isn't your stereotypical cowboy...in fact he only wears a Stetson and cowboy boots unless it's absolutely needed--I'll leave it to your imagination when that is...he's a hero through and through. When he finally opens up to Leo and fills us in on his past, we understand exactly why he acts the way he does. It was honestly heartbreaking to me to hear his story, but it cemented the fact that he and Leo definitely belonged together in the end. They healed each other and was exactly what the other needed. Jay definitely made sure we would be swooning over he not-quite-a cowboy, and believe me, if this is how they grow them in Wyoming, a girl just might be booking a flight rather soon ;)

I think the biggest departure for Jay was writing a western style romantic suspense novel. Sure we've had some exciting/scary/tense moments in her previous series, but this is packed with action and danger like no other. It made for an exciting change of pace, and Jay did an amazing job at weaving the suspense throughout the story. I also think that the side characters deserve a mention here because, as always, they were all excellently crafted and developed. I fell in love with them the same amount I did with our two leads. I honestly can't wait until we can read about Lane and Sutton's stories (Cy's 2 other brothers)...especially because Sutton's story is with Emrys and I need to know how that whole thing is going to play out.

“The goodbye doesn’t matter. It’s everything that came before the goodbye that is important.”

I highly recommend reading this book as soon as you can if you're a fan of Jay or are looking for a good western style romance. You'll definitely become a fan of Jay's after reading Retreat if you aren't already. With relatable characters and a fast-paced storyline, this is a must read! I can't wait to see what Jay has in store for us next!!

Happy reading :)
